The Evolution of the Charm Bracelet
by K Barton
Charm bracelets have a long history that may very well date back to prehistoric times, when bracelets or necklaces were made from bones and shells for adornment. These ancient jewelry pieces were not just meant to be admired for beauty, but they were also meant to ward off evil or endow the wearer with good luck. Charms evolved into something that could help certain religious sects identify others who shared their beliefs.
Queen Victoria was known for her charm bracelets, and made them trendy for European nobles during her reign. After World War II, soldiers came home with gifts of charms that represented the areas they visited and fought in. Charm bracelets became a big trend during the mid 20th century, when teenagers began to purchase and collect trinkets that symbolized certain events in their lives.
The interest in charm bracelets faded for a while, but the trend came back again, as many trends tend to do, after the turn of the century. This may be because fads during this time period began to turn "retro," meaning teenagers and young adults started looking to the past for inspiration for their personal styles.
Normally when old fads come back to newer generations, they are tweaked a bit to represent the current style and trends. The same is true of charm bracelets. In the past, these bracelets were made of sturdy link bases of silver, platinum, or gold, and held dangling charms that were made of the same strong materials that would last over generations.
These days, there are all sorts of different styles of charm bracelets. Some styles have charms that link together, while others simply clip onto a base that may be made of a precious metal or a simple leather cord. The reason for this change can be attributed not just to taste, but to convenience. The tinkling and dangling of traditional charm bracelets may be annoying to some people, so these newer styles might appeal to them.
No matter what your preference is in fashion, you should make sure that the types of base and charms you choose are something that you will always want to wear. You may even want to pass your bracelet down to a daughter or granddaughter. In this case, you need to choose a style that will endure changes in fashion as well as a material that is sturdy enough to last through the generations.
