Comparing Gold and Silver Jewelry
by Cheyenne Stone
Gold and silver are two of the most common elements that have been used by people a long time ago and up to the present to make jewelry. They are widely used in the jewelry industry today and even in the past. But what are the different differences between the two and what are each one's advantages over the other?
Silver
Silver jewelry is the most common type of jewelry that is used by most people around the world today. There are three types of silver jewelry, namely, pure silver, sterling silver or silver-plated. Sterling jewelry is the best among the three because it is the hardest of them all and tarnishes the least while pure silver is softer and gets scratched easily. The third type, silver-plated jewelry, is merely metal shaped into jewelry and coated with a thin coating of silver. Silver-plated pieces are the cheapest but they can be great as costume jewelry.
Toughness and style - Silver jewelry is known for its hardness and capability to withstand normal wear and tear. Silver jewelry is great for one whose work needs to use a lot of force. Silver jewelry also looks like white gold. Most of this type of jewelry nowadays have elegant designs that many people will love. Silver shines beautifully on people with fair skin.
Cheaper than Gold - Even though the silver jewelry is one of the most popular types of jewelry in the market, it is still cheaper compared to gold. And even as it is cheaper than gold, its quality and durability make it a very good alternative.
Gold
Color Preservation - Gold jewelry, when it comes with the right composition and karat, is a pure substance and will, thus, not tarnish.
Malleability - Though strong, gold is known to be very malleable. It is said that an ounce of solid gold can be flattened to cover an area of up to 300 square feet. Gold can also be made into strands thinner than the average human hair.
These are just some of the differences between gold and silver jewelry. But all those with a passion for jewelry somehow always have a hard time having to pick one over the other. Gold and silver are both beautiful in each of their own ways. And although it all depends on the person which one he or she prefers, one thing is sure about these two elements. They are both fun-tastic as fashion accessories.

1. You describe yourself as a Licensed Buyer of Gold Jewelry, why is licensing important?
Licenensing is so important for the following reasons. Nevada Coin & Jewelry is required to have an extensive Metro and FBI background check to be a Clark County licensed jewelry buyer. When you sell to a licensed dealer you get the security of a safe environment to do business.
2. How long have you been a buying jewelry?
I am a graduate gemologist from GIA and jewelry buying for over 15 years and AJ the owner of Nevada Coin & Jewelry has been jewelry & coin buying in Las Vegas for over 25 years. With this you get the best of both worlds expertise and experience.
3. What about those ads that you see on TV , Newspapers, and Online where they ask you to send them your gold and receive a check in the mail?
It is always better to sell your gold to a locally licensed jewelry buyer. Nevada Coin & Jewelry will make you a cash offer and you have the option to take the offer or not. Once you mail your gold away, you lose all control and you are forced to take whatever they send you.
4. How is gold jewelry evaluated? (At this point I would like to do a demonstration)
5. What does karat mean, what is the difference between 10kt and 14kt?
The interesting thing about gold it is that its all about percentages and numbers. 10kt is 41.7% gold 14kt is 58.3% gold 18kt is 75% gold and 24kt is pure gold. The higher the karat, the more gold content. Nevada Coin & Jewelry can pay in cash & will sort your jewelry by karat and to ensure you receive the most money.
6. What about broken gold jewelry, how does that compare in value?
That is the biggest misconception about jewelry. Broken jewelry is worth the same as non broken jewelry. You know the box that is next to your Jewelry box that has single earrings, broken chains and broken bracelets (pause) (pause) Nevada Coin & Jewelry will turn that into cash.
